The Dome experience

Artful Dome Mountain Retreat Near Maggie Valley, North Carolina

Discover a one-of-a-kind wellness and glamping retreat in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Located near Maggie Valley with a Waynesville address, The Artful Dome Mountain Retreat combines a historic 50-foot geodesic biodome, a luxury two-bedroom RV glamper, peaceful outdoor spaces, and modern comforts.

Surrounded by mountain scenery, gardens, a vineyard, and the soothing sounds of a nearby stream, this unique retreat is designed for relaxation, creativity, mindfulness, and reconnecting with nature. It is an ideal destination for couples, solo travelers, wellness getaways, personal retreats, meditation practices, and memorable mountain escapes.

The Historic Geodesic Biodome

The purple biodome has always been the signature feature of The Artful Dome Mountain Retreat. Measuring approximately 50 feet in diameter and standing three stories high, it is one of the most distinctive geodesic structures in Western North Carolina.

The dome was constructed in 1986–87 by members of the crew associated with John Denver’s biodome at the Windstar Foundation in Snowmass, Colorado. Its design was inspired by Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic dome and the United States Pavilion created for Expo 67 in Montreal.

The biodome also has a fascinating history as the centerpiece of an early biodynamic intentional farming community. Today, your host, Nina Howard, uses approximately one-third of the dome as a private art studio for creating large abstract paintings. Guests are asked not to enter the studio area, and Nina will not use the studio while guests are staying on the property.

The remaining biodome space is available for guests to enjoy and includes:

A yoga and meditation area

A comfortable swinging daybed

An activity room with books, drums, and games

Color-changing ambient lights

A five-speaker surround-sound system

Space for mindfulness, movement, music, and creative inspiration

The unique shape of the biodome enhances sound, creating a memorable listening experience. Connect your device through Bluetooth and enjoy your favorite music, meditation tracks, or relaxing sounds.

A Wellness Retreat for the Mind, Body, and Spirit

The Artful Dome Mountain Retreat is more than an unusual place to stay near Maggie Valley. It is a destination created to support rest, reflection, and personal well-being.

Spend your morning practicing yoga inside the dome, meditate while listening to the stream, relax in the private hot tub, or enjoy a quiet evening beneath the stars.

The natural setting and thoughtfully designed spaces make the property especially suitable for:

Personal wellness retreats

Meditation and mindfulness getaways

Romantic mountain escapes

Creative and artistic retreats

Couples’ vacations

Stargazing experiences

Nature-focused getaways

Quiet time for reflection and renewal

The property sits on land known locally for its quartz crystal bedrock. According to regional folklore and dowsing traditions, the surrounding area is also associated with vortex and ley-line energy. These stories and the peaceful mountain setting have attracted visitors interested in nature, spirituality, creativity, and wellness.

Outdoor Hot Tub, Rain Shower and Firepits

The outdoor areas offer several ways to relax and enjoy the beautiful Western North Carolina mountains.

Soak in the private hot tub after hiking or sightseeing, then rinse off beneath the outdoor copper rain shower. The property uses fresh well water, so there is no need to bring bottled water.

Additional Activity Room and Bathrooms

In addition to the bathroom inside the RV, guests have access to a toilet and sink in the biodome’s activity room. When conditions are comfortable, turn off the air conditioning, open the RV windows, and enjoy the refreshing mountain breeze.

The biodome can become very warm during sunny daytime hours. Guests may want to use the middle of the day for hiking, shopping, scenic drives, and exploring Maggie Valley or Waynesville. Mornings and evenings are often the best times to enjoy yoga, meditation, music, games, and the colored lights inside the dome.

Gardens, Vineyard and Seasonal Produce

Walk along the paved road in front of the property and continue uphill to find the grape vineyard and blackberry patch on the left. Grapes and blackberries are generally in season during late summer, and guests are welcome to enjoy ripe fruit when available.

You may also find seasonal herbs and vegetables growing near the front of the biodome. Availability depends on the season and current garden conditions.

Things to Do Near Maggie Valley and Waynesville

The retreat provides a peaceful mountain setting while remaining convenient to popular attractions and outdoor activities in Western North Carolina.
